Children's Workshop Keeping Safe at Secondary School
Suitable for Year 4 - 7
Children have many expectations along with worries and anxieties about Secondary School.
The workshop aims to dispel many of the popular myths children have about Secondary School and enables children to devise their own strategies to protect themselves and keep themselves safe from many of the situations/choices young people are inevitably faced with when attending Secondary School.
Topics covered include: -
What worries do children and young people have about Secondary School?
What situations may we be worried about?
Saying NO to drugs, drink, smoking and bullying etc.,
How do we say NO assertively?
What is passive, aggressive and assertive behaviour?
Assertion
What stops us saying NO?
How difficult it is to say NO and mean it?
What is peer pressure?
How does peer pressure impact on children and young people?
What worries do children and young people have about peer pressure?
Developing group and individual strategies to keep children and young people safe.
Helping children and young people feel more confident about the move to Secondary School
The Kidsafe team have begun working with older children, aged 10 and 11, helping to prepare them for some of the challenges of the transition to secondary school. Whilst the basic approach of the course is the same, there is more overt emphasis on the ‘’teenage” issues of drugs, alcohol, truancy and bullying that they may have to deal with at secondary school. The valuation to date shows the following impact:
92% felt that they would need to say no to drugs at secondary school
80% felt they would need to say no to smoking
96% felt they would need to say no to truancy
80% felt they would need to say no to bullying
92% felt they would need to say no to alcohol
96% felt that they would be more confident about saying no to these things as a result of the Kidsafe course
