The impact of the programme in school: - Tremendous, as always. The pupils really remember the messages and we know regularly hear pupils talking about “telling a trusted adult.” The children are confident to talk about worries and because the Kidsafe message is regularly reinforced and referred to in assemblies and on classroom walls the children are familiar with the “brand” making it easier to recall the key messages. We have found children to be far more mature and confident now when sharing uncomfortable feelings or private worries with staff. The usefulness of the programme: - Lots of practical examples of children using the language to talk to each other and adults. Pupils know the messages and so can offer advice to each other as well as being confident to know what feels “right”. The programme fulfils a huge chunk of our “Stay Safe” ECM agenda and is a super safeguarding tool. It ties in really well with our innovative work around Internet safety and cyber bullying. How Kidsafe fits the ECM agenda: - We need to teach pupils to keep themselves safe and children, young people and their carer’s are informed about the key risks to their safety and how to deal with them. The children and young people are provided with a safe environment and the incidences of child abuse and neglect are minimised. The main the programme meets are: - children and young people are safe from maltreatment, neglect, violence and sexual exploitation, children and young people are kept safe from bullying and discrimination, children are kept safe from crime and anti-social behaviour in and out of school and children have security, stability and are cared for. The Kidsafe programme should be available to all schools so that all children have the same chance to learn how to protect themselves.

The work in our Yr4 classes has had a very positive impact on the children’s behaviour. It has given clarity to the often 'taboo' subject about keeping themselves safe, what is appropriate and what is not acceptable in terms of their own bodies, it has enabled children to speak more openly about the issues and any concerns they have. This commonality of language has strengthened the child protection strategies in school and given staff and pupils a better way of communicating a difficult subject. Teachers and Support Staff feel more aware and able to pick up on problems more securely than previously. Children first and foremost considered it fun and enjoyed the interactive nature of learning, but also realised the serious side of the discussions and advice. They appreciated the clear message of what was right, what was wrong, and that they had the power to do something about anything that made them uncomfortable. The whole programme sits neatly alongside the ethos and values of Greengate Junior School and supports much of the work in SEAL, PSHE and the Every Child Matters agenda that we persue; re-enforcing the message about keeping safe. It is the sort of quality work that should be available to all schools.

Thank you for the workshops you have delivered in school. The feedback from the students, staff and governor who observed has been universally positive. The sessions were delivered superbly and dealt with a range of students concerns sensitively and allowed time for students to open up, discuss their concerns and ask any questions they wanted to. What was particularly helpful to me was the discussion on the range of social networking sites which alerted me to changes we needed to make to our systems in school in order to more effectively protect students.
